Research Topics:
Pseudomonas, gene expression, global regulation, biodegradation, hydrocarbons The expression of genes encoding bacterial catabolic pathways for hydrocarbons is frequently subject to both specific and global regulation controls. Global control assures that expression of the pathway genes occurs only under the appropriate metabolic and physiological conditions. This regulation process implies that cells must detect several metabolic and environmental signals, integrate them and derive appropriate regulatory responses. Understanding these regulatory processes in essential to know how organic compounds are biodegraded in Nature, and to optimize the expression of genes of interest in bioremediation or biotransformation processes. Our main interest is to identify the global regulation networks that force the expression of catabolic pathways to adapt to the context of cellular metabolism, and to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms. These regulatory networks are still poorly understood, particularly in the bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas, which are our main model. Pseudomonads are, however, very important in biotechnology and in medicine. Global regulation networks control not only catabolic pathways, but also other important aspects of cell biology that can affect, for example, virulence and antibiotic resistance. We have initiated a functional genomics approach that will help to define these regulatory networks and to elucidate the molecular basis of the regulatory mechanisms.
