Research Topics:
My group is studying virulence mechanisms in Mycobacterium tuberculosis principally by applying comprehensive genetics working with virulent strains in a biosafety level 3 laboratory. The genetic manipulations include generation of gene deletions, generation of unmarked gene deletions, generation of conditional knock-outs, introduction of point mutations, transposon mutagenesis, heterologous gene expression and heterologous protein secretion. Research areas are: Analysis of essential genes, drug target discovery and validation Synthetic lethal parthways Transport processes Rational vaccine improvement by secretion of effector proteins

 

Organisms studied:
  • Mycobacterium bovis
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis

 

Special methods / technologies:
Biosafety level 3 laboratory; comprehensive genetic manipulations of slow-growing virulent mycobacteria: gene deletions, generation of unmarked gene deletions, conditional knock-outs, introduction of point mutations, transposon mutagenesis, heterologous gene expression, heterologous protein secretion
