|The research projects pursued at the institute of Infectiology focus an the molecualr basis of pathogenicity and the defense strategies of the host. We strive for a better understanding of the molecular interplay between pathogenic micororganisms and their target cells (and organisms). In pursuing these questions we expect to identify new ways to circumvent or even potentially to exploit the ingenuity of pathogenic microbes. Current research is focussed on two complementary areas: A. Molecular Biology of Bacterial Infections B. Mucosal Immunology and Vaccine Development Specific projects include: A: • Cell and Molecular Biology of Pertussis Toxin • Molecular Cross-talk and Signal Transduction by Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC/ATEC) • Molecular Biology of the AIDA Autotransporter Family • Characterization of in vivo Expressed Protein sof Yersinia enterocolitica • Evaluation of Target Cell Responses (Cellular Microbiology) B: • Mucosal Immune Responses in the Gastrointestinal Tract • Application of the AIDA System for the Development of Live Oral Vectors • Novel polysaccharide conjugates for immunization|
