|The background of the group is in glycobiology, focused on neural cell interactions as well as on the molecular specificity of bactrial adhesion. We have previously discovered and chataraterised a number or new adhesion specificities in both gram-negative and gram-positive organisms. Our current interests focuse on the molecular mechanisms of streptococcal pathogenicity, especially their adhesion mechanisms to host carbohydrate receptors, as well as the molecular background of hydrogen peroxide resistance. The organisms studied are the pig and human pathogen S. suis and the human pathogens S. pyogenes and S. pneumoniae. The main interest targets at the molecular level are adhesins binding to galabiose receptors and the ferritin-like molecule Dpr. At the molecular level we are aiming at a detailed description of the molecular structures and their function as well as at their genetics.|
